Have you ever heard of an onion cough syrup? I bet you are thinking that it would taste horrible. I thought the same thing when I read about it, but tried it anyway, and was pleasantly surprised. It actually tasted much better than many over-the-counter cough syrups without those possible nasty side effects. And kids love the taste too! You may even catch them sneaking into the syrup when you're not watching. But that's ok, just don't tell them how good it is for them!
Onions have been used around the world as an herbal remedy for cold and flu symptoms. They are rich in chromium, vitamin C, fiber, manganese, vitamin B6 and potassium which boost the immune system. An herbal syrup can be made with onions and be an effective medicine for coughs, bronchial congestion and respiratory infections.
To make the syrup you will need:
1-2 large onions, sliced thinly (yellow or white onions can be used)
1 cup or more honey
In a wide mouth canning jar, drop in a layer of onions and then cover with some of the honey. Alternate the layers of onions and honey until the jar is full. Top off with the honey and cap.
Put the jar in a dark corner of your kitchen for about 3 days. Pour the mixture through a strainer into another jar and cap. Discard the onions and store the syrup in the refrigerator.
How to use: take a spoonful of the syrup as needed for coughs or add a spoonful to a cup of tea and drink.
Tip: If you don't have honey, you can use sugar, but the medicinal affects will be enhanced by using raw honey.
