On a very cold and stormy night in November, we trudged through the muddy municipal cemetery in XoXo, Oaxaca on the Night of the Dead. Despite the weather, the cemetery was crowded with families sitting vigil, and tourists like us, taking it all in. We stopped at a well tended grave site decorated for the holiday with marigolds, candles and an elaborate sand painting of two intertwined skeletons. A middle aged woman and a younger woman were sitting off to the side. They noticed my husband with his camera, and the older woman asked if he would like to take a photo of the grave she had so lovingly decorated.
