The source of this October holiday is most likely the Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celtic New Year began on November 1 more than 2000 years ago and the Celts honored Samhain, the Celtic lord of death by celebrating on the evening before. Samhain was thought to allow the souls of the dead to return to their earthly homes for this Hallow e'en or Halloween. Around 800 A.D., the church established All Saints' Day on November 1 to allow the people to celebrate the festival that they had celebrated before they became Christians. In the United States, Halloween has evolved and is not taken so seriously. It has simply become a fun holiday to let your imagination run free.
